A a scenic rail journey on the Taieri Gorge Railway – is one of the world’s great train trips and one of Dunedin’s top attractions. Departing daily from downtown Dunedin into the Taieri Gorge, this trip travels through some of New Zealand’s most beautiful and ever changing scenery which can not seen from the road! 

Departing from Dunedin’s beautiful railway station the Taieri Gorge Railway begins its scenic journey into some of New Zealand’s most ever-changing, spectacular and iconic scenery. The train travels through the Southern parts of Dunedin city until it arrives at Wingatui junction where it turns off onto the Taieri branch. From here the train sneaks across the Taieri Plains and climbs into the Taieri Gorge, a narrow and deep gorge carved out over aeons by the ancient Taieri River, negotiating through the gorge with ease as it travels through ten tunnels and over countless bridges.

There are sightseeing stops, an on board café and outside viewing platforms it is the perfect all weather activity and one of the key attractions in Dunedin – not to be missed.
